"Diet has nothing to do with IBS"

I should seriously write a book called "'Diet has Nothing to do with IBS'... and other lies Doctors tell you..."

I saw a GI specialist on Tuesday, who tried telling me that IBS is a muscle disorder, and cannot be regulated by what you eat. He did, however, admit that some people find success in avoiding coffee and chocolate, and that Metamucil *might* be beneficial. He said he could prescribe me some medications, but there is limited success with drugs. In essence, IBS is a "Nuisance Disorder" caused by stress, and it's something I'll just have to live with. He added that most people find the symptoms subside as they age, whether that was from reduced symptoms or an increased discomfort tolerance, he couldn't say.

I have a theory... it goes something like these:

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a symptom of improper diet (food allergies/intolerances, bacterial growth, too much insoluble fiber, too little soluble fiber, etc), and is compounded by stress. As people get older, they learn (either consciously or subconsciously) which foods trigger GI problems. By avoiding these foods, their symptoms are reduced. For me, these foods would be beef(!), ice cream (*sigh*), granola, dried fruit, etc.. If IBS is not triggered by diet, why is it that I can predict how my body will react to these foods? Why is it that by eliminating these problem foods, my GI problems are likewise eliminated?

Obviously, it has nothing to do with diet... /rollseyes

Honestly, if alternative healers are the only ones who've made the connection between the food you eat and the way your GI tract functions... I seriously have to question what's being taught in medical schools.

Morning Smoothie 2

I've made a few changes to my morning smoothie. A gentleman at the Natural Food Pantry in Kanata suggested that I try Shelled Hemp Seed (aka hemp hearts, hemp nuts, etc), and Salvia (aka Chia seeds, Salba, etc), to go along with the Flax (which is still important for women). I also thought I'd give Goat's Milk Yogurt a try, since I don't get along very well with cows.

So here's my attempt at a super omega packed smoothie...

1/2 cup Goat's Milk Natural Yogurt
5 Tablespoons Hemp Nuts
2 Tablespoons Salvia
2 Tablespoons Ground Flax Seed
1 Tablespoon Pumpkin Seed Oil
1/2 cup Juice (whatever tickles your fancy)
~1 cup Frozen Fruit (enough to thicken the smoothie)

The end result was very... healthy... tasting, and quite grainy. Without raspberries to add some pizazz, it was a bit like yogurt with a heap of porridge. Not very appetizing. Next time, I'll make sure to add a 1/4 cup of frozen raspberries to pick up the colour, and maybe a touch of honey to sweeten it up. Perhaps Stevia, or Cocoa, or a Banana would help improve the taste.

I'm wondering if it would be easier to just choke down the stuff with a bit of yogurt -- forget trying to make it a smoothie. Spooned over a ripe banana, fresh berries or a baked apple might be a better idea. My gag reflex can't quite adjust to the texture as a "smoothie", but it might be able to overlook it as a "granola-type fruit topping".

Debbie Bliss "Essential Baby" Vest Problem

Ok, so I accidentally got back into knitting. I was at Chapters after work (did I mention I got a full-time position at a place related to both my love of woodworking AND gardening? Yeah -- totally cool!), and I found this absolutely adorable book by Debbie Bliss "Essential Baby". It has some really classic patterns with adorable pictures and clear directions. The only problem is the first project I'm trying to do has some mistakes which aren't posted on the Debbie Bliss Pattern Revision page... REALLY annoying.

The normal pattern is K8, P1, rep. After the armholes are shaped, the back is split into two parts so an opening can be created for the baby's head to fit through the neck. It's secured with a button at the collar which is a K2, P1 pattern.

My problem is that it's telling me to begin K2, P1 immediately after splitting the back. However, the picture clearly shows the original pattern continuing up at least 18 rows.

Ugh... I need a Ben & Jerry break :(

________________

Vermonty Python must've cleared my mind -- It wasn't as bad as I originally thought. I sort forgot that "purl to end" IS the pattern on the wrong side... oops >.< style="font-weight: bold;">Debbie Bliss "Essential Baby" Vest Knitting Pattern Errata

So we're living in Kingston...

To contact us Click HERE
... and I'm getting home sick. If you know me, download skype and call/msg me. Seriously -- it's free, and it's cool.

Short Story: Nathan got a job in Kingston. When he first mentioned the job opportunity, I was like "Ummm... No. I'm not moving to Kingston." Then, through the many trials leading up to the job offer, I could see God's Hand leading us to this place. I began praying that Nathan *would* get the job. Then he did, and we spent a week in a motel trying to find a short term-lease (which we found), we moved that weekend, and I left for Florida the next day. After visiting my new Snowbird Mum for nearly 3 weeks, I came back to our new home. A week later, it's starting to settle in that we're not moving back to Ottawa any time soon.

It's cold outside, and I don't know anyone. How do people make friends in new cities? I mean, seriously. In grade school, you'd walk up to someone and ask them if they wanted to play tag, or build a snowman. Bang! Instant friend. I might not have been a social butterfly, but I didn't have to drive 2 hours to play Settlers, or "talk about feelings." This whole finding new social circles sucks.

I need to find a church... I did some research last month and found half a dozen in Kingston that didn't scare me (okay, I guess the rest weren't that bad -- just theologically stunted -- but I'm sure they have a heart for God). Nathan went to the closest one a few weeks ago (while I went to a Southern Baptist church in FL -- but that's a whole different story), and he seemed to like it. So maybe we'll go back this Lord's Day.

It would be a lot easier if there was an RP church in Kingston...
Sovereign God? check. Biblical theology? check. Covenental relationship? check. Singing the Word of God? check. Yeah.. I love my Psalms. Give me 119x over "Here I am to Worship" anyday of the week. A few years of singing lessons and I might post some youtube videos... Until then, you can listen here. I've had a Psalter on my wishlist for a few years now... I think it's time to order one myself. But I digress...

I should take some classes... Bellydance, woodworking, art, acting. Something. I should also probably look into getting a job. Sigh... Is there anything in Kingston aside from prisons and universities?

Staying indoors makes it easier to pretend I'm not completely alone in a new city, miles from anyone I know... well, aside from Nathan, but he's at work >.>

I think I'll go outside now.

So we're looking for a house in Kingston...

To contact us Click HERE
... and this is our search area. It extends down to Lake Ontario's Shore. While it would be cool to live on Wolfe or Howe Island, I don't think Nathan would enjoy taking the Ferry to work every day >.>

It would be larger, but those long lakes are a real pain to drive around. I guess it would be easier if we stayed within Kingston, but I have this dream of raising alpacas and spinning their fibre on a beautiful spinning wheel I designed and carved myself. Somehow, I don't think I can do that within city limits, aye?

On the other hand, being close to everything Kingston has to offer (I'm still trying to figure out exactly what that is) would be handy. Buses are handy (although I got my G1 last week, after letting it expire nearly 2 years ago, so I can do my G2 test as soon as I practice parking >.>), and I think it would be easier to resell if the house weren't in the middle of nowhere.

I still want to build my Timber-Frame Strawbale house, but I think that might have to wait until I can get Nathan to warm up to the idea.

ASTROLOGER PREDICTS ROMNEY WIN AND A NEW POPE

from The Noetic Digest...
St. Malachy's predictions can begoogled.ASTROLOGER PREDICTS ROMNEY WIN AND ANEW POPE
tags: New Pope 2012, Petrus Romanus,PresidentRomney?, USelection 2012Of the previous eightelected presidents of the USA who sought a second term, only two have not beenreturned to office: Jimmy Carter and George Bush (senior). So it should followthat President Obama has every chance of being re-elected. However according toastrologer Donal Holland, the unfolding of Barack Obama’s astrologicalbirth-chart for the election 2012 and the inauguration 2013 shows in nouncertain terms that he will fail to win a second term.

And Holland has a good track record. He was spot on in his predictions for boththe Irish and French presidential elections.
Furthermore he also predicts a new Pope in Vatican city by November 2012!
But first to Obama. According to Holland:
Obama’s office, Solar Return lordMC, Jupiter (Gemini 10.51) falls on royal fixed star Aldebaran (Gemini 10).Because Aldebaran is a first class magnitude star of Mars nature it can bedeeply unpleasant. Having this unpleasantness therefore informing hissignificator of office in the year of an election can only bode ill for hisre-election to the presidency.

He goes on to point out that:The testimonies from the chart forthe Lunar Return that governs Inauguration Day, 21 January 2013 are much moreconvincing. The Lunar Return’s most striking and significant testimony is lord1, Mars (Capricorn 29.38) about to experience a major loss of dignity as itplunges from exaltation in Capricorn into a complete absence of dignity inAquarius. For Obama to undergo such a significant drop in dignity, and fromsuch an elevated height, and what is crucial, to experience it in the LunarReturn that presides over Inauguration Day when a change of leadership ispotentially enacted, must mean he is stepping down from his exalted position asthe in-coming president takes office.
And the same chart also describes a similar uncomfortable change ofcircumstance for his wife Michelle, represented by lord 7, Venus (Sagittarius11.4). Venus is on the powerful and malefic fixed star Antares (Sagittarius 10)in the constellation of the Scorpion that brought down proud, boastful andworldly Orion (stinging him to death). Accordingly Antares denotes endings, especially for those in powerful worldly positions. For Michelle Obama then, holder of the worldly title, First Lady, to have Antares on her significator inthe Lunar Return that covers Inauguration Day, must signal her vacating herpowerful position and leaving behind her life of privilege. It is preciselythis specific experience of loss by his wife in this critical month of the transferof power that underpins the claim that President Obama will leave office,January 2013.

So interesting times ahead forRomney perhaps? Read Holland’s full analysis here

Now on to the Vatican!

Papal succession has always been of interest to fans of prediction, largelyowing to the famous papal prophesies of St Malachy. According to Tom Horn andChris Putnam, authors of Petrus Romanus: The Final Pope is Here:
For more than 800 years scholarshave pointed to the dark augury having to do with “the last Pope.” Theprophecy, taken from St. Malachy’s “Prophecy of the Popes,” is among a list ofverses predicting each of the Roman Catholic popes from Pope Celestine II tothe final pope, PetrusRomanus or “Peter the Roman,” whose reign would end in thedestruction of Rome.

First published in 1595, the prophecies were attributed to St. Malachy by aBenedictine historian named Arnold de Wyon, who recorded them in his book,Lignum Vitæ. Tradition holds that Malachy had been called to Rome by PopeInnocent II, and while there, he experienced the vision of the future popes, including the last one, which he wrote down in a series of cryptic phrases.

According to the prophecy, the next pope(following Benedict XVI) is to be the final pontiff, Petrus Romanus or Peterthe Roman. The idea by some Catholics that the next pope on St. Malachy’s listheralds the beginning of “great apostasy” followed by “great tribulation” setsthe stage for the imminent unfolding of apocalyptic events, something manynon-Catholics would agree with.

This would give rise to a false prophet, whoaccording to the book of Revelation leads the world’s religious communitiesinto embracing a political leader known as Antichrist.

In recent history, several Catholicpriests–some deceased now–have been surprisingly outspoken on what they haveseen as this inevitable danger rising from within the ranks of Catholicism as aresult of secret satanic “Illuminati-Masonic” influences.

These priests claim secret knowledge of an multinational power elite and occulthierarchy operating behind supranatural and global political machinations.Among this secret society are sinister false Catholic infiltrators who understandthat, as the Roman Catholic Church represents one-sixth of the world’spopulation and over half of all Christians, it is indispensable for controllingfuture global elements in matters of church and state and the fulfillment of adiabolical plan they call “Alta Vendita,” which is set to assume control of thepapacy and to help the False Prophet deceive the world’s faithful (includingCatholics) into worshipping Antichrist.

As stated by Dr. Michael Lake on the frontcover, Catholic and evangelical scholars have dreaded this moment forcenturies. Unfortunately, as readers will learn, time for avoiding Peter theRoman just ran out.

All very dramatic! However Horn andPutnam’s book is an interesting read and may have astrological validation ifHolland is yet again on the money. He claims that the next conclave will beupon us in the period 17 September – 14 October 2012.
According to Holland:
The significant progressed factor inBenedict’s chart flagging up the time of his death (in broad terms) is hisprogressed Asc (Cancer 15.08) conjunct fixed star Canopus (Cancer 15)representing an oar in the ship, the Argo.
It is named in honour of King Menelaus’ helmsman who died of a snake bite whenhis ship ran aground. The church, of course, has from earliest times beensymbolised by the ship which navigates over the sea of the desire nature.Subjugation to the desire nature is a necessary condition of our humanexistence. Hence while Jesus walks on water, Peter sinks (Matthew 14:26-31).

In order then not to drown in the desires Peter needs a boat. And this has cometo be associated with the church. Even the actual building carries a referenceto this because the nave in a church derives from the Latin ‘navis’ (ship).
And significantly, as they struggle with their storm tossed barque on the seaof Galilee, the first leader of the Catholic church, Peter, along with hiscrew, the apostles, need reminding that the ship was, and will always be,watched over (Mark 4:35-41).

So, if the church is a ship piloted by Peter, it appears ominously significantthat the chart of Pope Benedict XVI, the helmsman of the church, powerfullyhighlights the distinguished helmsman, Canopus, notable for his death. Canopustherefore is an illuminating testimony to Benedict’s death in the near future.

So interesting times ahead maybe. Toread more see Dr Holland’s full analysis here. (astrodot.wordpress.com)

·        Print MailThe militaryservices haven't created offices on all overseas bases to help soldiers casttheir ballots, citing money shortagesUPDATED 23:53 PM EDT,SEPTEMBER 4, 2012 | BY JOHNSOLOMONWhy It Matters: Congress requiredthe Pentagon to create voting assistance offices on all overseas military basesto help deployed soldiers cast their ballots back in their home states, butmilitary branches haven't fully complied, citing budget shortages and adifference of opinion with lawmakers. With anotherelection lurking around the corner, the Pentagon is getting a bad review forits efforts to comply with a new law designed to make it easier for overseasmilitary personnel to cast their ballots. The Military andOverseas Voter Empowerment (MOVE) Act was passed by Congress in 2009 and signedinto law by President Barack Obama and was supposed to make it easier for bothsoldiers deployed overseas and U.S. citizens living abroad to cast ballots backin their home states. One of the keyprovisions required each military branch to create an installation votingassistance office (IVAO) for every military base outside an immediate combatzone. But the Pentagon’sinspector general, the military’s internal watchdog, reported Tuesday it got adisappointing result when it tried to locate such voting assistance offices oneach installation earlier this year.“Results wereclear. Our attempts to contact IVAOs failed about 50 percent of the time,” theinspector general reported. “We concluded the Services had not established allthe IVAOs as intended by the MOVE Act because, among other issues, the fundingwas not available.”The Pentagonestimates it could cost $15 million to $20 million a year to create all the officesrequired by the law.In addition,Pentagon officials apparently disagree with the tactics the law recommended, preferring to use advertising and digital outreach efforts to educae overseassoldiers rather than creating the voting assistance offices.“DoD officials alsoposed concerns about IVAO effectiveness,” the inspector general reported. “Theynoted that younger military personnel were the biggest DoD military populationsegment and emphasized that IVAOs were likely not the most cost effective wayto reach out to them given their familiarity and general preference forcommunicating via on-line social media and obtaining information frominternetwebsites.“They suggestedassistance might be provided more effectively and efficiently by targetedadvertising,” the report noted. The inspectorgeneral recommended the Pentagon create better survey capabilities to identifythe voting needs of soldiers after the 2012 election and to work with Congressto change the parts of the law that it isn’t complying with.Pentagon officialssaid they agreed with both recommendations. You can read thefull report here.

FreedomAbove Fortune was founded by Joseph R. (Joe) Banister, a former IRS CriminalInvestigation Division Special Agent who learned of serious constitutionalquestions relating to the federal income tax and the federal banking andmonetary systems. You’llnotice that the name of this organization is "Freedom Above Fortune"rather than "Freedom Without Fortune" or "Freedom Instead ofFortune". "Freedom Above Fortune" is an organization dedicatedto the concept that no amount of real or perceived economic prosperity("fortune") is worth trading for your liberty. This is not to saythat pursuing economic prosperity is, in and of itself, bad. Rather, it is tosay that those who are willing to put their freedom at risk for a few pieces ofsilver, similar to the manner in which Judas betrayed Jesus Christ, areshortsighted and foolish. Ifyou are willing to sell your freedom for short term financial security, real orperceived, the willingness to sell your very soul can’t be far behind.Mr.Banister’s expertise in the fields of accounting, finance, taxation, and lawenforcement enabled him to not only understand these issues but realize that hecould play a role in bringing the issues into the public arena for analysis anddebate.http://freedomabovefortune.com/index.php______________________________________________________________________________           Randy Engel Joe Banister’s regularSaturday morning radio show on September 28th featured an interview with RandyEngel, one of the nation’s top investigative reporters. Earlier in hercareer, Ms. Engel was known for her reputation as an expert in Vietnamesehistory and her work with Vietnamese refugees, for which she received theDistinguished Service Medal for her service to Vietnam. As a Catholicherself, Randy’s later work led her into the issues of the abortion-relatedeugenics movement, homosexuality in the Catholic Church, and previously unknownproblems with the organ donation industry. The first hourof this morning’s program was devoted to a discussion of her book “The Riteof Sodomy: Homosexuality and the Roman Catholic Church”. She had becomealarmed at the indications of the existence of conscious efforts to sexually“condition” children in Roman Catholic schools. She was able to link theseefforts to specific Catholic Dioceses in which the homosexual network wasdominant in the clergy. In addition, sheidentified individual high-ranking prelates in the Catholic Church who wereactive homosexuals (including three well-known U.S. Cardinals and at least onerecent Pope), and who had considerable influence in the appointment of Catholicbishops throughout the U.S. She explainedthat not only is this problematic with respect to concerns for the affectedchildren who may be exposed to molestation, but also that her research producedextensive information documenting the heavy use of pornography and drugs byhomosexual clergy.According to Ms.Engel, this behavior represents direct violation of the laws of the Church andthe Christian Faith. It should be treated as unequivocally disqualifying forcontinued service in the Church, yet the Catholic Church has repeatedlyprotected those accused of such conduct, while concealing its own actions tocover up the problem. In her words, she found evidence of “shocking depravity” that was very difficult forher to deal with personally while trying to maintain an objective journalisticperspective on the matters she was investigating.A relatedconcern, which exists as well for homosexuals outside the Church and in themilitary, is the enormous potential for blackmail of individuals who arecarrying on a hidden homosexual life style. The consequences of undiscoveredblackmail can be extremely serious, and can result in widespread injustice anduntold harm to innocent individuals far removed from the original blackmailthreats. Ms. Engel statedemphatically that her research has led her to the firm conclusion that there isno “homosexual gene” and that homosexuality is learnedbehavior.    The second hourwas devoted to a discuss of the rising concerns relating to the organ donationindustry. To no one’ssurprise, the industry is driven by money. There are serious conflicts ofinterest in the hospitals where emergency patients are treated. Many physiciansnow recognize that heart transplant donors are not dead, and this raises veryserious ethical concerns. Once a patient with traumatic injuries arrives at thehospital, he or she is considered a possible organ donor. There are manypotential transplant recipients waiting for organs, and there is big moneyinvolved in the transplantation industry. The pressures to turn the patientinto an organ donor are powerful, and there is evidence that traumatized familymembers may be subjected to inappropriate pressure to agree to organ donation. Physicians willcertainly take issue with Ms. Engel’s conclusions, but there is a growing bodyof opinion in the medical community that her concerns have some merit. Doctors opposedto 'presumed consent' for organ donationsMany doctors areopposed to proposals to "presume consent" for organ donations, warning the radical move could make patients start to fear the NHS, a newsurvey suggests. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/2676275/Doctors-opposed-to-presumed-consent-for-organ-donations.html
CRITICALINFORMATION CONCERNING "BRAIN DEATH" AND ORGAN TRANSPLANTATIONFor over fortyyears there has been a deadly code of silence pertaining to "braindeath." Behind closed doors a controversy raged. Many of those in themedical field opposed this reinvention of death. The controversy continues...

"Brain death" was invented for the sole purpose of organtransplantation, living human medical experimentation and a means in whichmeasures to sustain life could be legally withdrawn. It was the first legalform of euthanasia in the US. This deadly code of silence has been broken.

http://lifeguardianfoundation.org/____________________________________________________________________________Ms. Engel’sadvice - GET OFF THE ORGAN DONOR LIST and sign an opt-out card to avoid the new“presumed consent” laws spreading across the country. This is especiallyimportant for young people who are just starting to drive, and who are beingcoerced in the schools to sign organ donor cards. Randy Engel’sweb site has a publication titled “Don’t Give Your Heart Away”:ProductDescriptionLike theabortion industry, the vital organ transplantation industry rests on theutilitarian principle that the end justifies the means. Like the abortionindustry, its nexus is hard, cold cash – billions in hard cold cash. The onlything harder and colder that the cash, is the hearts of the surgeons and staffwho, having come to the knowledge that they must kill a living donor in orderto retrieve a healthy organ for a recipient fellow human being, continue toengage in this medical butchery, and rationalize said killing as justifiable onthe grounds that that the excised organ will be used to save the life ofanother living human being.

Pro-lifers need to make vital organ transplantation a key right to lifeissue because it is a violation of the Natural Moral Law and God’s Commandment– thou shalt not kill.

THE RESURRECTION OF AMERICA--FREEDOM FOR ALL NATIONS

Gentlemen:As always, I wish ya'll(you and yours) a good day.
This email is inresponse to some daily postings onnesaranews.blogspot.com, godlikeproductions.com and more dreams of mine. With my simple emails, I have tried for years to prevent chaos. Appears chaoswe are going to have. My last dream had me in an abandoned store which had beenconverted to a military supply depot. We were clearing out the supplies asaction had begun. Next, I was outside the store with my family and saw hundredsof WW2 planes in the air. Silver with black stripes. If I am not mistaken, oneplane actually turned into a  triangular craft similar to our Aurora orER3B. As my family and I were walking we came upon a very old mansion. Somehowwe ended up scaling the roof. While on the roof, 4 young gangsters onrollerblades came flying over us and went down to look into the house to see ifsomeone was inside and I presume to loot.
Since it appears thingsare going to be happening quite soon, I guess we return to Vegas and theblind dealer plays these cards.
1. As I've saidseveral times, I think patriotic forces should take control of all TV stations. No more cabal bullshit.
2. I'm goingto assume Dr. Paul (civilian) and Mr. Powell (military) will address ournation.  I would suggest the Pentagon Good Guys consider adding Mr. Schwarzkopf, Mr. Gates, Mr. Petraeus,  well as Mr.Sanders and Mr. Kucinich. I have watched videos of Mr.Kucinich and he is probably  the most emotional orator of the above. Hemight be able to fire our country up.
3. I would suggest thatDr. Paul and Mr. Powell start with a very positive outlook on our situation. Wehave not been the land of the free, butwe are now with the arrests of the bankers/politicians and the release of theNESARA Funds/Prosperity Packages/Global Settlements. We are no longer debt slaves to the privately owned, unconstitutional Federal Reserve. There will be Peace on Earth andthe release of technological marvels. Please be very, very positiveand uplifting when addressing our nation.
4. I would suggest ourkids with their boots on the ground be told to have a verypositive, up-ifting outlook when dealing with the public, atleast in those areas that are not gang infested hotspots;
5. I am going to assumethe WW2 airplane turning into a triangular craft is a sign that the HigherIntelligence is going to have their scout shipsdecloak in the form of our craft to help prevent any chaos. If this is not thecase, then I would appreciate the Pentagon Good Guys telling the Higher Intelligence that is how it's going to be. My orders.
6. I can't believe thereare people still working for the cabal. So I would suggest Dr. Paul and Mr.Powell tell those that work for the cabalthey are making a grave mistake. Why? Because of the following:    a.They have prevented the release of the NESARA Funds/Prosperity Packages/GlobalSettlements for decades. Enough money so you would not have to be doing what you are doing (losing);    b.They have prevented the release of technology that would have prevented thedestruction and pollution of our planet;    c.They have prevented the release of technology that would have produced theJetsons' vehicle decades ago;    d.They have prevented the release of medical technology that would havecured all diseases and replaced lost limbs;    e.They sent you and everyone you love to war for their profit and you havewitnessed the death of your friends and maybe family members;    f. You have returned from their wars for profit, many with PTSD, and they donot provide you with the proper treatment so you can try to returnto a normal  life without the nightmares and strain on your family becauseof  your behavior;    h.They wanted the Israel-Iran War to be nuclear in nature and thus fry you andeveryone you love like a piece of bacon;     i. To put it bluntly, they don't give a damn about you and we do as youwill get whatever treatment you need;     j.  Ifyou do not join the patriotic forces, you will be left out of the new financialsystem and you and your family will starve.
I think that's it for now. I hope some of this was of some benefit. See ya'llwhen the dust settles.

May Father Bless andProtect All--Especially Our Kids With Their Boots On The Ground

The Bible in 3D: God’s Word Revealed Through Bible Geography, Sean Hochdorf, Lectureship Director

Polycarp (69 – 156 AD) was a member of the church who was reported to be a disciple of the apostle John. According to his account, he appears to have been at least 86 years old when he was arrested and put to death. What was his great crime? He refused to burn incense and thus acknowledge that Caesar was Lord. When they pressed him to do so to spare his life, his response is reported to have been “"Eighty and six years have I now served Christ, and he has never done me the least wrong: How then can I blaspheme my King and my Savior?" When they threatened to burn him at the stake he stood firm and replied “"Thou threatenest me with Fire which burns for an hour, and so is extinguished; but knowest not the Fire of the Future Judgment of that Eternal Punishment which is reserved for the Ungodly. But why tarriest thou? Bring forth what thou wilt!" Because he was a Christian, meaning he knew that Jesus alone is Lord, he was burned at the stake.

These events occurred in the city of Smyrna. The city of Smyrna was chosen, over other competing Asian cities, by the Roman Empire with the honor of having a temple built to Emperor Tiberius. This was not good news for the church there. As one writer noted:

Evidently then the cult of Empire and Emperor, of Rome and Rome’s Caesar, was a matter of great pride in Smyrna. Did the Christians refuse to sprinkle incense on the fire which burned before the emperor’s bust? Of course they did. To do so would be idolatry. They could not call Caesar Lord when Jesus was their Lord. But their unwillingness to conform was interpreted by the common people as a disgraceful and even treacherous lack of patriotism. -- John R. W. Stott, “What Christ Thinks of the Church,” Preaching for Today, Grand Rapids, MI: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1958, p. 37.
Many Christians suffered at Smyrna including Polycarp, who was among many who died here for their allegiance to the Lord Jesus Christ. I find it very interesting that Smyrna is one of the churches of Asia Minor that were written to in Revelation by the apostle John. Again, Polycarp is believed to have been one of John’s disciples and the letter to Smyrna dealt with pending persecution that was to fall upon Christians. The events surrounding Polycarp’s death bring what John revealed to this church over fifty years prior—“Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10, NKJV.) Polycarp is just one recorded example of fulfilling what Jesus rightfully expects—be faithful to Him up to and including your death.

I became more interested in learning about the city of Smyrna and The Bible in 3D: God’s Word Revealed Through Bible Geography was a treasure of information. This lectureship book deals with several key biblical places from three vantage points—lectures on key places and corresponding events, an index to the Bible based on places of the Bible and a very informative and attractive set of maps. I found myself really captivated by much of the material in this book. Since it was published in 2006, it contains a wealth of information from past scholars and recent discoveries as well. This would be an excellent addition to the church library dealing with a subject that some may have not given as much detail to as in times past.

The Warren-Flew Debate, Thomas B. Warren & Antony G. N. Flew

The Warren-Flew Debate, Thomas B. Warren & Antony G. N. Flew

This debate occurred in Denton, TX at North Texas State University on September 20-23, 1976. Both Warren and Flew possessed doctorates and were trained in philosophy and the utilization of logic. The exchange is monumental for several reasons, but for one it meets the assertion that Christianity does not make logical or rational sense. In this debate, Thomas Warren uses the same tools of logic and rationality employed by atheists and agnostics to respond to and defeat their attacks against Christianity.

It would be good for one to know that Flew had signed a debate proposition that was unique among atheists which reflected his atheism and his conviction for it. Flew affirmed in the debate that “I Know That God Does Not Exist”. This is different than other atheist debates who attempt to shift the burden of proof to those who are theist—they must prove God exists or atheists win by default. In the debate, they both were supposed to argue their points of view in the affirmative; i.e., in the second half of the debate Warren affirmed “I Know That God Does Exist” and Flew denied in the negative.

Prior to reading the debate, I failed to notice that Warren’s book Have Atheists Proved There Is No God? was available to Flew prior to the debate. Had Flew read the book where Warren answers the best attack atheist can muster and outlines the case for biblical theism? Yes, he had…thoroughly it appears. Brother Garland Elkins, longtime friend of Warren, testifies:

Brother Warren told me that during his debate with Mr. Flew he walked over to his table and saw that Mr. Flew had a copy of brother Warren’s book entitled, Have Atheists Proved There Is No God? (See the book review written for this book prior.) Brother Warren said that the book was very worn around the edges indicating that Mr. Flew had used it much in his studying.--Garland Elkins, “A Renowned Atheist Renounces Atheism,” Yokefellow, Vol. 32, No. 1, January 2005, p. 2.

One wonders how much Warren impacted Flew. Brother Roy Deaver, who assisted brother Warren at the debate, makes an interesting observation about the shock Flew may have experienced when confronting true New Testament Christianity (as opposed to Catholicism or Denominationalism) being similar to what the skeptic Robert Owen had experienced when he encountered the same with Alexander Campbell. Deaver observed:

So far as he [Flew] was concerned ‘Christianity’ meant Catholicism and denominationalism. He had never before encountered simple New Testament Christianity. And, he had never before encountered an opponent of Dr. Warren’s caliber. Dr. Flew, son of a Methodist minister, knows full-well that truth cannot be established upon the basis of feelings (emotionalism, subjective experiences). It must have been quite a shock to him when brother Warren said: “Dr. Flew, we fight that kind of thing just as much as you do. On that point you are just speaking to the wrong crowd.”--Roy Deaver, “The Warren-Flew Debate,” Biblical Notes, December 1976.
I found Dr. Warren’s exchange with Flew about personal “religious experience” intriguing. Keep in mind that Flew is the one who brought up various religious people claiming a vision or some other experience as proof for Christianity or God, not Warren, who rejected such “experiences”. To me, it seems as if Flew’s own past experiences were wrapped in this argument (as some religious do seek to establish their credability on emotionalism.) After Flew launched into this, when he was supposed to be in the negative criticizing arguments affirmed by Warren, brother Warren replied:

Dr. Flew spent a great deal of his time about religious experience. Did you hear me say anything about “religious experience”? Did I make any argument thus and so that “someone has had a religious experience and therefore God exists?” I said nothing at all about that. Dr. Flew, I fight that as well as you do. There are people all over this country who claim “Oh a miracle occurred, a miracle occurred here and there.” “Well, let’s see one.” “No, it happened over yonder. Somebody else knows how and where it happened.”

It’s just like every evolutionist knows somebody else who knows how to prove it. Dr. Flew can’t prove it. “There is somebody over in some other university.” Now if you go over to that university, he’ll point you to some other university. “There is some learned man in Munich or Austria.” Or “there is somebody in New Zealand or Australia.” Or “there is somebody in California or Harvard that knows how to do it.” But when you get there, they don’t know how to do it. “There is somebody in the last century.” “Darwin did it.” Well, Darwin didn’t think he did. Dr. Flew sometimes argues as if Darwin gave a deductive argument, but that won’t stand.

No, I did not make the argument on “religious experience” Dr. Flew. You are talking to the wrong crowd of people when you are talking about that. And I suggest that you stay with the affirmative arguments. I am at a complete loss to know why you ignore the arguments I do make and invent other arguments and reply to them! It is sort of like Jones says “x is false”, but Jones says “Ah, that is not right, y is true.” When there is no connection between “x” and “y”.
One should take note that Antony Flew was not unqualified for the debate. If one does much reading among respected philosophers, Flew’s name readily comes to the surface. Roy Deaver commented on Flew’s credentials and evident failure in the debate, and it is interesting reading since Deaver’s role was to read Flew’s books to assist brother Warren in reply:

Dr. Flew knows full-well what a sound argument is. He knows that argumentation is not assertion and is not insinuation. He constantly chides and ridicules religious people for refusing to make a sound argument. He constantly calls upon them to face up to the task of proving their position. The “Law of Rationality” holds that “We ought to justify our conclusions by adequate evidence.” Dr. Flew respects this law. Dr. Flew (of all people) did not refuse to make a sound argument because he did not know what a sound argument is!

Literally hundreds of people have expressed to me their disappointment because Dr. Flew refused to make an argument. He raised questions. He chided. He insinuated. He indicated that he would eventually get around to actual argumentation. But, he never did. He did a lot of talking and philosophizing, but he never did get down to the task of trying to prove his point. (Dr. James Bales observed: “A philosopher often spends his time throwing dust into the air, and then complains because he cannot see.”) One person said: “Dr. Flew would approach the microphone as if he were really going to do something this time, and then…just fizzle.”

It seems to me that the weak and disappointing efforts upon the part of Dr. Flew really show the force, the power, and the value of the debate. If Dr. Flew COULD have made a sound argument the conclusion of which would have been “I know that God does not exist” Dr. Flew WOULD have done so. The fact that Dr. Flew DID NOT proves that he COULD NOT, and that HE KNEW THAT HE COULD NOT! Dr. Flew’s failure to make an argument also indicated his profound respect for Dr. Warren. He knew that every word he said would be carefully and thoroughly examined by brother Warren, and that no error would be allowed to pass unnoticed. Dr. Flew could not make an argument which would stand up under the light of logical examination. -- Roy Deaver, “The Warren-Flew Debate,” Biblical Notes, December 1976.
In preparing for this review, I did additional research by watching the DVD of the Warren-Flew Debate plus an interview of Thomas Warren reflecting on the debate 20 years later. Both videos are available from World Video Bible School.

Brother Warren passed way on August 8, 2000. I am sure he would have been pleased but saddened, that Antony G. N. Flew finally acknowledged that God existed but failed to follow through on the implications of an intelligent God before he (Flew) passed away. For more information about Flew’s renouncement of atheism, see his final book There Is A God: How the World’s Most Notorious Atheist Changed His Mind which will be the subject of a future book review.
